In the framework oft he European reserve areas system Natura2000, the project area is protected by European and German law. It belongs to two so-called FFH-areas. These are: „Emmericher Ward“ (DE 4103-302) and „Rhein-Fischschutzzonen zwischen Emmerich und Bad Honnef“ (DE 4405-301).
